Up until 1979, Venet made sculptures based on mathematical principles. So supported were his works by their relation to mathematics, that he inscribes his ‘Arcs’, ‘Angles’ and ‘Straight Line’ sculptures with their specific measurement in degrees. These pieces paved the way for Venet's ‘Indeterminate Line’, which he regarded as liberation from geometric forms and Minimal art. The formal freedom of the ‘Inderterminates’ newly allowed Venet to explore notions of disorder and chaos.
‘Indeterminate Line’ (1991), in oxidated rolled steel is one of the most characteristic manifestations of this part of Venet's work. There is nothing arbitrary about the piece - its curved forms and apparent lightness belie the considerable bulk of the sculpture.
